The illusion of fluency
Highlighting, re-reading and copying out notes all share one property: they make the material easy to process, and your brain reads "easy to process" as "known".
The short version
- You judge whether you know something by how easily it comes to mind while you're looking at it — a signal that's almost useless.
- The most popular study techniques are popular because they generate this feeling, not because they work.
- The fix isn't a better technique. It's a better measurement: produce the material from memory and see what comes out.
- Expect the correction to be unpleasant. Finding out you know less than you thought is the useful part.
There is a specific and very common experience: you finish revising a topic, you feel solid on it, you close the book — and three weeks later in the exam hall you can produce roughly a third of it. The gap between how well you thought you knew it and how well you did is not bad luck. It is a predictable error, it has a name, and it is produced by exactly the study habits that felt best at the time.
Fluency is not knowledge
When you re-read a page you've read twice already, it goes down easily. The sentences are familiar, nothing surprises you, your eyes move quickly. That ease is real — it's called processing fluency — but it's a property of the page in front of you, not of your memory. It tells you that the text is recognisable. It says nothing about whether you could produce any of it with the page shut.
The problem is that we don't have a direct read-out of what's in memory. To judge whether we know something, we use whatever signals are available, and fluency is the loudest one. So it gets used, and it is systematically wrong in one direction: it makes you feel more prepared than you are, and it makes you feel that way most strongly right after studying, which is exactly when you decide whether to stop.
The tell
"I knew that, I just couldn't think of it" is fluency talking. If you couldn't think of it under exam conditions, you didn't know it in the sense that matters. Recognition and recall are different capacities, and only one of them gets marked.
The techniques this explains
Highlighting
Highlighting has been studied a lot, and the results are consistently unimpressive — in reviews of study techniques it lands near the bottom. The reason is that it demands almost nothing. Deciding a sentence is important takes a fraction of a second and requires no engagement with what it means. Worse, a highlighted page becomes more fluent on re-read, so it inflates the very signal you're using to judge yourself, and it can actually hurt on questions that require connecting ideas across the parts you didn't mark.
Highlighting isn't useless, but its use is triage — marking what to come back to — not learning. The learning has to happen afterwards.
Re-reading
The most common study technique there is, and the one with the worst effort-to-benefit ratio past the second pass. A second read does add something. A fourth adds close to nothing except confidence. The direct comparison with self-testing →
Copying notes out neatly
This one is especially seductive because it takes hours, which feels like it must count for something. It mostly doesn't: transcription can be done with the language centres running and the comprehension off. If rewriting notes helps, it helps when you rewrite them from memory, or restructure them into something new — a question set, a comparison table, a diagram. Anything that requires a decision about the content.
How to measure instead
The whole fix is to replace a feeling with an observation. All four of these do that.
Close the book and produce it. Ten minutes, blank page, everything you can recall about the topic. What ends up on the page is your actual knowledge; what you thought you knew is irrelevant. This is uncomfortable in direct proportion to how useful it is.
Predict, then check. Before you look at an answer, commit to a confidence: sure, roughly, no idea. Then check. Do this twenty times and you will start to recalibrate — you'll learn what your own "sure" is actually worth, which is a skill in itself and transfers to the exam, where you have to decide what to spend time on.

Explain it to someone who'll interrupt. Fluency survives a monologue. It does not survive "wait, why does that follow?"

There's a stage, a few days into studying properly, where you feel markedly worse about a subject than you did when you were highlighting it. Nothing has got worse. You have simply swapped a flattering measure for an accurate one, and the accurate one has bad news. This is the point at which most people conclude the new approach isn't working and go back to re-reading, which immediately feels better.
If you can sit through that fortnight, the rest is straightforward. You now know which topics are weak, which is the only information that lets you allocate time sensibly. The person who feels confident about everything has no idea where to spend the last two weeks; you do.
If you take one thing
Never end a study session on a feeling. End it on a test — even a bad, thirty-second, out-loud one. Whether you're right or wrong, you leave with information instead of an impression.
