Writing flashcards that don't waste your time

When a deck stops getting used, the reviewing habit usually isn't what broke. The cards were unlearnable from the day they were written.

The short version

  • One idea per card. A card that asks for three things is three cards pretending to be one.
  • The front must specify exactly one answer. If you have to guess what's being asked, the card is broken.
  • Write cards from material you understand. Cards made from text you didn't follow just preserve the confusion.
  • Write them yourself. Making the card is a large share of the learning, and downloaded decks lose it.
  • Delete ruthlessly. A hundred good cards beat a thousand mediocre ones by a mile.

Flashcards get a mixed reputation, and it's deserved — but the variance is in the cards, not the format. Cards are just a delivery mechanism for retrieval practice, which works. A well-made deck is one of the most efficient study tools there is. A badly made one is a machine for feeling busy.

Here's the specific difference.

One card, one thing

The most common mistake by a distance. Consider:

Broken

Front: The French Revolution

Back: Began 1789. Causes: fiscal crisis, food shortages, Enlightenment ideas, resentment of privilege. Key events: storming of the Bastille, Declaration of the Rights of Man, Terror 1793–94, Thermidorian Reaction…

You cannot pass or fail that card. You'll recall some of it, decide that's near enough, flip it, read the rest, and move on having learned nothing. It has no answer, so it can't be tested.

Fixed

Front: What immediate financial problem pushed Louis XVI to call the Estates-General in 1789?

Back: The crown was effectively bankrupt — debt from the American war plus a tax system that exempted the wealthiest.

The test: could you mark this card right or wrong without arguing with yourself? If not, split it.

The front must pin down the answer

A card front is a retrieval cue, and a cue that could plausibly point at four different answers is a bad cue. "Mitochondria" could want the function, the structure, the membrane count, or the DNA. You'll answer whichever comes to mind, flip, and score yourself generously.

Make the question specific enough that exactly one answer fits. "What do mitochondria produce, and by what process?" — now there's one right answer and you either have it or you don't.

Understand first, then write

Cards made by copying sentences out of a textbook you didn't follow are worse than useless: they let you recite words without meaning, and they consume review time that should be going somewhere useful.

If you can't explain the idea in your own words, you're not ready to make a card about it. That's not a delay — it's a diagnostic. Elaboration is the step you're missing.

Card patterns that work

The plain question

Front asks, back answers, in your own words. Most cards should be this. Phrase the front as an actual question with a question mark — it's a small thing, but bare noun-phrase fronts drift back towards ambiguity.

Fill in the blank

Take a sentence you understand and delete the load-bearing word. "Enzymes lower the ______ of a reaction without being consumed." Fast to write, fast to review, and it keeps the surrounding context that makes the fact meaningful. Blank one thing, not three.

Both directions, when both directions matter

For vocabulary, make two cards: target→English and English→target. Recognising a word and producing it are different skills and one does not give you the other. For most other material one direction is enough — you'll be asked "what does this term mean", not "what term means this".

Picture cards

For anything spatial — anatomy, apparatus, a graph shape, a map — put the image on the front with the label removed. Far better than a verbal description of a visual thing, and it matches how the exam will ask.

Why-cards

The most valuable and least written kind. "Why does adding a catalyst not change the equilibrium position?" These are the ones that transfer to unfamiliar questions, because they encode reasoning rather than a lookup.

The failure modes

The essay on the back. If the back is more than about two lines, you're reading rather than recalling. Split it.

Cards that leak. A front phrased as "Is X true of Y?" is a 50/50 guess, and you'll pass it without knowing anything. Watch for fronts whose grammar gives the answer away, too — "What is the three-stage process…" tells you the count for free.

Ordered lists as single cards. "Name the eight stages in order" is a card you will fail forever. Break it into links: what comes after stage three? What comes before stage six? Chains are learnable; blocks aren't.

Downloaded decks. Someone else's cards are written against someone else's understanding, someone else's syllabus and someone else's phrasing. You also skip the part where writing the card teaches you the material. Occasionally worth it for pure reference banks — the periodic table, irregular verbs — and rarely worth it otherwise.

Never deleting anything. Decks rot. Material drops off the syllabus, cards turn out to be ambiguous, some just aren't worth the review time. Deleting a card you keep failing for uninteresting reasons is a legitimate move, not a defeat.

How many, and when

Make cards as you cover material, not in a panic in May. A card written the day you met the idea is written with the context intact; one written from cold notes four months later is a transcription exercise.

Volume is less important than people think. Twenty good cards per topic, reviewed properly, will beat two hundred that you skim. If your daily review has become something you dread, the deck is too big — and the fix is deletion, not discipline.

If you take one thing

Before you save a card, read the front and ask: could someone else answer this exactly, without seeing the back? If the answer is no, fix it now. It will never be cheaper to fix than at this moment.
