Retrieval practice: why testing yourself beats re-reading
Getting something out of your head does more for memory than putting it in again. It is also the technique students rate as least effective — which is most of the problem.
The short version
- Trying to recall something changes your memory of it. Re-reading it mostly doesn't.
- The effect is large, has been replicated for decades, and shows up across ages, subjects and formats.
- It works best when recall is effortful and when you check the answer afterwards.
- It feels less effective than re-reading while you're doing it. That feeling is wrong, and it is the main reason people abandon it.
Here is the finding, stripped of everything else. Take two groups of people. Give both the same passage to learn. Let the first group read it four times. Let the second read it once and then try to write down everything they can remember, three times over. Immediately afterwards, the re-readers do slightly better — and are far more confident. Come back a week later and the picture has inverted: the group that tested itself remembers substantially more, and the gap is not small.
That basic experiment, in various forms, is one of the most reliably replicated results in the psychology of learning. It is usually called the testing effect, or retrieval practice. The name is unfortunate, because "testing" makes it sound like assessment — something done to you, for a grade. It isn't. It's a study technique. Nobody has to see the results.
What's actually happening
The intuitive model of memory is a container. You read something and it goes in; read it again and it goes in harder. Under that model, testing is just measurement — a way of checking what made it in, which can't itself add anything.
Memory doesn't behave like that. Retrieving a fact is not a read-only operation; it modifies the thing it retrieves. Every time you successfully pull something out of memory, you make it easier to pull out next time, and you strengthen the particular cues you used to find it. That last part matters more than it sounds. Knowing a fact isn't much use if you can't get to it from the direction an exam question approaches it from. Retrieval practice builds routes in, not just the fact itself.
There's a second mechanism, and it's arguably the more useful one: retrieval tells you the truth. When you re-read a page, everything looks familiar, because you are looking at it. Familiarity gets mistaken for knowledge with remarkable consistency. When you close the book and try to reproduce the argument, the gaps announce themselves immediately. You cannot fool yourself in a way that survives a blank page.

Why it feels wrong
Robert Bjork's phrase for this family of techniques is desirable difficulties: conditions that slow learning down in the moment and improve it in the long run. Retrieval practice is the clearest example. It is uncomfortable. You sit there with a blank page failing to remember the third of the four causes, and it feels like you are getting worse at the subject. Re-reading, by contrast, is smooth and pleasant, and each pass feels like progress.
The consequence is a systematic misjudgement. When researchers ask students to predict how much they'll remember a week later, students reliably predict that re-reading will serve them better — including students who have just personally experienced the opposite in the same study. The feeling of fluency during study is a bad predictor of later recall, and people trust it anyway.
There's no trick for making retrieval feel good. The realistic move is to stop using "how did that session feel?" as your measure and start using "what could I produce from memory at the end of it?" instead. The second question is the only one an exam will ask.
How to do it
Almost anything that makes you produce material from memory counts. The formats differ mainly in how much effort they demand, and effort is roughly what you're paying for.
Free recall (the brain dump)
Close everything. Take a blank page. Write down everything you can remember about the topic — in any order, in note form, badly. Then open your notes and mark what you missed. This is the cheapest possible version and it is startlingly effective, mainly because it gives you no cues at all, so it exposes the gaps a flashcard would have papered over.
Give it a hard time limit — ten minutes — or it turns into copying.
Questions you wrote earlier
Turning your notes into questions as you make them is the single most leveraged habit in this whole area, because it converts a passive artefact into a testable one at the moment when the material is freshest. A note that says "three causes of the 1929 crash" becomes a question that says "what were the three causes of the 1929 crash, and which was decisive?" — and the second one you can use in April.

Flashcards
Fine, with caveats. Cards are the most convenient retrieval format and the easiest to do badly: a card with a whole paragraph on the back isn't a retrieval prompt, it's a page you're reading in a smaller window. Cards are also biased towards facts, which makes them excellent for vocabulary, definitions, dates and formulae, and much weaker for anything that requires you to construct an argument. Explaining it to someone
Teaching a topic out loud, without notes, is retrieval practice with a coherence check bolted on: you have to produce the material and connect it well enough that a listener follows. The listener can be imaginary. Talking to a wall is slightly absurd and works anyway.
Past paper questions, closed-book

Four things that make it work better
Always check afterwards. Retrieval without feedback leaves errors in place, and confidently-held wrong answers are stubborn. Checking doesn't need to be elaborate — glance at the notes, mark what you missed — but skipping it removes a large part of the benefit.
Struggle a little before you look. The benefit scales with effort. Sitting with a half-remembered answer for fifteen seconds is productive; sitting with it for five minutes is not. If nothing is coming at all, look it up, then close the book and try again immediately.

Get the whole thing out, not just the first line. Partial recall — remembering that there were four causes and stopping — trains you to produce partial answers. Push to the end of the thought before you check.

Retrieval practice strengthens what you already understand. It does not create understanding you never had. If a topic hasn't landed at all — you read the page and nothing parsed — testing yourself on it is just repeated failure with no upside. Get to a first pass of comprehension by reading, asking, or having it explained; then start testing.
It also doesn't rescue material you never encoded properly in the first place. Notes you copied down without processing are hard to retrieve because there's nothing there to retrieve. Elaboration is the technique that fixes that end of the pipeline.
And there's a practical failure mode worth naming: testing only on the things you already know. It's pleasant, it produces a lot of correct answers, and it moves nothing. If a session felt good throughout, you probably picked the wrong material.
If you take one thing
Halve your reading time and spend the other half producing the material from memory. That is the whole recommendation. It will feel worse and it will work better, and the only reliable way to convince yourself of that is to try it on one topic and check a week later.
